Wedding send-off ideas

By Emma Carinci 25 January 2017

Sending off the bride and groom with confetti is a very traditional aspect of the wedding day. There is no reason why you cannot keep this traditional custom but use something different to throw in the air and celebrate the moment.

Regardless of what you would like to be thrown your way, make sure there is either someone dispensing the material or organise to leave a small bag of the material, with instructions, on the chairs at the start of the ceremony.

Petals

Throwing petals – either fresh or dried – is a very romantic and cost-effective way to send them off. Consider purchasing fake petals if you want larger quantities to be thrown up in the air.

Balloons

Balloons are a signature celebration item and an even better idea if you want to avoid having things thrown at or on you. Guests can hold balloons as they create a guard of honour and, if helium balloons are organised, release them as the bride and groom exit the premises. Consider colour coordinating balloons with the bridesmaids’ dresses or the theme.

Sprinkles

So colourful and so inexpensive! Sprinkles or hundreds and thousands flying through the air will look like a rainbow spilling out over, in front of and behind the bride and groom. (Kids will love this one too!)

Leaves

Perfect for the weddings which fall just as autumn is breaking and comes at no cost whatsoever. Scour parks and suburban streets and collect a few bags of colourful leaves. Consider having a basket full at the end of each row of seats with one person in charge of holding it while other guests take handfuls from the basket and thrown accordingly.

Bird seed

An environmentally friendly option which will not need to be cleaned up afterward! Bird seed looks just like confetti and can be set up at a cute bird seed bar. Some guests might even appreciate the symbolism of sending the ‘lovebirds’ off on their way.

Bubbles

Easy and cheap to organise and it will look so effective! Bonus – no clean up required!

Sparklers

For the glitz and glam of the day, sparklers will make for a spectacle of light as you leave your ceremony or service.

Lavender

Lovely lavender will not only look good, but it will smell great! Either leave the stems as they are or take the flowers off, distributing quantities in little bags or envelopes for guests. A send-off with lavender is ideal for outdoor ceremonies or a vintage theme.
